Julie Hayashi creates works around the themes of “what arises naturally” and “the transient,” primarily using traditional techniques and materials rooted in Japanese painting. While studying the conservation of Japanese paintings, she deepened her understanding of these techniques and materials, and has consistently researched “Nijimi (blurring)” and “Tarashikomi (dripping)” techniques found in the works of the Edo-period Rimpa school.

Starting from this exploration, she developed a strong interest in the concept of “Jinen” ̶ the idea of nature as it is ̶ and continues to seek a dialogue with nature through the deliberate act of painting and the spontaneous phenomena that emerge from the movement of ink and pigments on the surface.

In recent years, Hayashi has been further exploring the relationship between travel and creation, sound and the invisible, and painting, inspired by her admiration for the literati culture of the Edo period. In her “noise (sawari)” series, she leaves the studio to immerse herself in mountains, forests, and foreign cities, drawing inspiration from the sensations of air and wind that resonate within her as “noise (sawari).” She works improvisationally, sometimes spreading washi paper directly on soil or grass and grinding sumi ink with river or lake water, embracing the traces left by the wind, rain, and snow as the will of nature itself. Through these acts, she attempts a collaboration with the natural world. As she continues her practice, Hayashi seeks to deepen her awareness that she herself is part of the flow of nature ̶ and to gently convey that realization through her work.
